Our Services
WaySafe provides a variety of specialist road safety and traffic management services throughout NSW.
WaySafe specialist road safety and traffic management services are appropriate for public and private road managers, developers, legislators, rail infrastructure managers, solicitors, rail trail managers, and mine managers.

Road Safety Audit
WaySafe assists road managers to reduce risks to safety for road users:
-
road safety audits conducted under Austroads guidelines
-
road user behavioural observation
-
general and thematic audits: motor cyclist, bicycle, pedestrian, heavy vehicle
WaySafe assists road works managers to ensure traffic control matches traffic control plans, is fit for purpose, and considers the safety of road workers, plant, and road works, and that of the road user passing through the site.

School Zone Safety
WaySafe recognises the inherent difficulties with managing safety around schools, particularly as they grow. This can include both existing schools and new schools. Basic safety parameters must be built into traffic operation near schools, including:
-
separation of transport modes accessing schools
-
inclusion of school infrastructure within the surrounding road environment
-
part-time operation of school zones and full-time 24/7 operation of the roads
-
understanding of child behaviours and cognitive limitations
-
understanding of adult road use behaviours and habits
WaySafe considers the non-school road users and the school road users, their needs and interactions in a holistic review of roads in the school area of influence.

Walking and Cycling
WaySafe assists road managers and other pedestrian and cycle path managers to provide safer, effective facilities by:
-
assessing existing routes for potential safety issues
-
observing path user behaviour and interaction with others and the environment
-
developing Pedestrian Access Mobility Plans and cycling plans, focus on safety and connectivity
-
developing or proofing policies and guidelines
-
developing means to promote pedestrian and cyclist safety
WaySafe believes that:
-
a 'road user hierarchy' should place the most vulnerable users at the top
-
local amenity should not be relegated to cater for long-haul commuting
-
traffic control signals must become vulnerable road user 'aware', and provide adequate accessibility
-
in major CBDs, pedestrians and cyclists should have priority over light vehicles, and traffic signal phasing timed to provide coordinated green for pedestrians
Wayde is ECF route assessment certified.

Curve Advisory Speed Assessment
WaySafe assesses horizontal curve geometry under the AS1742.2 standard using electronic ball bank and video.
Geocoded curve advisory speeds can be provided mapped, and sign locations marked on-site. A report identifying deficiencies in curve delineation can be provided that assesses:
-
appropriate location of curve warning and advisory speed signs
-
appropriate advisory speed and warning sign types
-
line marking including no overtaking lengths
-
guideposts and chevron alignment markers
-
lighting
-
shoulders and pavement-shoulder transitions
-
other factors that may influence driver awareness of the road alignment
-
assessment under daylight and night conditions
WaySafe considers the curve needs with an holistic view, which includes the association with other hazards in the road environment.

Road - Rail Crossings
WaySafe assists road managers to meet their responsibilities under the Rail Safety National Law (NSW):
-
identify and assess risks to safety
-
determine measures to reduce risk
-
develop safety management plans
-
assist with Safety Interface Agreements
-
work with road managers and rail infrastructure managers to collaboratively manage safety at rail - road crossings
-
provide electronic storage of, and access to documentation
-
develop policies, guidelines, and procedures to manage safety responsibilities
-
inspect and assess signs and line marking for compliance with AS1742.7
WaySafe can assist rail infrastructure managers and freight companies to assess railway crossings for oversize overmass (OSOM) vehicle access
Safe System Assessment
WaySafe provides Safe System assessments to road managers, and promotes the implementation of safe system principles in all road projects. Safe System principles are applicable to:
-
road design projects
-
existing roads
WaySafe is an advocate for the Safe System philosophy, and promotes the need for these principles to be considered in all road projects and included from project inception.

Speed Zoning
WaySafe assists road managers with determining road speed zones that take into account:
-
NSW speed zoning standard
-
movement and place framework
-
safe system philosophy
-
the existing and proposed road users, their needs, and their safety
WaySafe takes a holistic approach to speed zoning, with safety as the primary focus.

Crash Site Inspection
WaySafe provides a review of road environment factors that may be associated with serious injury and fatal crashes.
This service is of importance to road managers to understand what factors in the road environment they manage are influencing road safety, and liability.
WaySafe provides a geo-located report that includes:
-
location of crash site, where possible, that is geolocated and mapped
-
detailed information of the general road environment
-
detailed information of road geometry, existing traffic facilities, and extraneous factors that may have influenced the likelihood and/or the consequence of the crash
WaySafe takes a holistic view of the road environment and reports facts without apportioning blame.
This service may be of interest in litigation, providing an understanding of the road environment and conditions.

Traffic Control Facility Asset Assessment
WaySafe assists road managers in traffic control facility asset management:
-
locate and report condition of traffic control facilities
-
identify unsafe, inappropriate, or absent facilities
-
assist in meeting legislative record keeping requirements
-
geocoding traffic facility locations
-
report in tabular and mapped formats
WaySafe assesses against the applicable Australian Standard, Austroads guide, and TfNSW delegation.
This service is also applicable to crash investigation and litigation.

Floodway Road User Safety Assessment
WaySafe assists road managers to identify risks to safety at known floodways, considers compliance with AS1742.2, and reports findings and deficiencies.
WaySafe will also set-out:
-
locations for depth markers
-
advance warning signs and pavement markings
-
delineation on approach to and through the floodway
-
road closure and detour routes
Risks at floodways are underestimated, partly due to the TfNSW methodology for coding of crash data. Road users have drowned attempting to cross through floodways, potentially from not knowing the depth of the water, or from not understanding the risk of being washed off the road.

Wayfinding
WaySafe provides a full wayfinding service, including:
-
site inspection
-
wayfinding scheme development
-
sign design
-
reporting and geolocating
WaySafe service ranges from single sign design through to route assessment, signposting scheme design, designing signs and determining support structures, and reporting.
